Sheng Shi Zhuang Niang

Sheng Shi Zhuang Niang, often translated as 'The Makeup Artist of the Prosperous Age,' is an ONA series produced by the Chinese animation studio Imagineer. Released in the late 2010s, the series reflects the broader cultural trend of 'guofeng' or national style in Chinese media, which blends historical aesthetics with contemporary storytelling. The production was conceived to capitalize on the rising popularity of ancient costume dramas and web novels, positioning itself within a niche that prioritizes intricate visual designs and traditional beauty culture.

The series is centered on the art of traditional makeup and styling, utilizing digital animation to showcase historical attire and cosmetic techniques. While the project aimed to attract audiences interested in both romantic fantasy and historical craftsmanship, its design focus serves as a bridge between educational appreciation for ancient styles and the narrative tropes common in Chinese web animation. It received modest reception as a visually distinct entry within the competitive landscape of domestic online animation, appreciated primarily for its commitment to aesthetic detail.
