Where it came from
Shenhai, also known as Deep Sea, was produced by Coloroom Pictures and directed by Tian Xiaopeng, the visionary filmmaker behind the successful Monkey King: Hero Is Back. The film represents a significant milestone in Chinese animation, developed over seven years with the primary goal of pushing the boundaries of particle-based visual aesthetics, which the studio described as 'particle ink painting' to bridge traditional Chinese art styles with cutting-edge computer-generated imagery.
Upon its release, the film garnered attention for its profound thematic exploration of grief, depression, and the psychological journey of its protagonist, Shenxiu. While the visual spectacle was widely praised by critics and audiences for its unprecedented level of detail and artistic ambition, the narrative's heavy emotional tone led to diverse reactions, ultimately solidifying its reputation as a polarizing yet artistically courageous entry in modern animation history.
