Where it came from
Shenmi Fusu, also known as The Mysterious Fusu, was released in 2019 as an ONA (Original Net Animation) produced by Tencent Penguin Pictures. The series is grounded in the popular donghua tradition, utilizing 3D computer-generated imagery to adapt narratives that blend historical fantasy with traditional aesthetics. It represents a period of significant growth for Tencent’s animation division as they sought to capture a domestic and international audience with high-production-value serialized storytelling.
The design of the series centers on intricate character models and atmospheric world-building intended to reflect classic Chinese folklore tropes through a modern technical lens. While the direction and artistic choices were part of a collaborative effort under the Tencent umbrella, the project was received as a notable entry in their portfolio, aimed at viewers who appreciate the intersection of stylized martial arts drama and character-driven mystery. Its aesthetic follows the trend of polished, fast-paced animation that defined the late 2010s output of major Chinese streaming platforms.
