Based on a japanese children`s book by Yoshie Kawaura.
Shiba-wanko, a Shiba-inu dog, and Miike-nyanko, a calico cat, live together in a classic Japanese-style house with the traditional Japanese alcove called a tokonoma. Shiba-wanko is a very gentle and hardworking soul who does all of the cleaning, laundry and cooking in the house. Miike-nyanko is a different type all together, being rather temperamental and not very good with housework. Together, these two learn the manners and customs associated with events such as the proper Japanese way to treat one`s guests, preparing for a Japanese New Year and how to enjoy the kimono, the traditional Japanese costume. Each chapter covers a specific topic which has to do with living in "Wa" (the Japanese-style spirit of peace and harmony) throughout the changing seasons.

Where it came from
Shibawanko no Wa no Kokoro, or 'Shibawanko's Heart of Japan,' debuted in 2006 as a television adaptation of the popular picture book series by Michiko Kawakami. Produced by the animation studio Kids Station, the series was designed to introduce children to traditional Japanese customs, manners, and seasonal etiquette through the eyes of a charming Shiba Inu protagonist. The animation style emphasizes a soft, watercolor aesthetic that mirrors the illustrative quality of the source material, creating a gentle and educational atmosphere suitable for young viewers.
The series was conceived as a way to preserve cultural heritage in a modern context, focusing on the concept of 'wa'—a term denoting harmony and balance. Michiko Kawakami’s original character design captures a sense of warmth and reliability, which was central to the show’s reception as a gentle moral guide. It gained a loyal following for its calming influence and its commitment to teaching viewers about the significance of small, daily rituals and the appreciation of the changing seasons.
