Shiki

Shiki was produced by students and faculty at the Tokyo University of the Arts, known as Geidai, as part of the institution's celebrated animation program. The short film emerged from a pedagogical environment designed to push the boundaries of experimental storytelling and traditional craft, emphasizing the development of emerging animators who often balance artistic innovation with the rigorous technical standards of the Japanese animation industry.

The film is defined by its atmospheric approach to visual narrative, reflecting the Geidai department’s tendency toward auteur-driven, contemplative works rather than commercial mass production. While it operates within the broader context of student-led independent cinema, it garnered attention for its cohesive aesthetic direction and the technical precision of its frame-by-frame animation, which serves as a notable example of the high caliber of work originating from academic animation laboratories.
