Shikimori's Not Just a Cutie

Shikimori's Not Just a Cutie was adapted from Keigo Maki's manga series and premiered in April 2022 as a production by studio Doga Kobo. The series was developed during a period where the 'rom-com' genre was seeing a resurgence in popularity, focusing on the subversion of traditional tropes by presenting a protagonist, Shikimori, who balances a gentle demeanor with a protective, cool-headed personality. The production team sought to highlight this duality through dynamic character animation and a soft, pastel-infused color palette that emphasizes the romantic atmosphere of the high school setting.

The adaptation was directed by Ryota Ito, who aimed to maintain the lighthearted tone of the original manga while leaning into the comedic timing required for the show's frequent physical gags. Upon its release, the series received attention for its character designs, which were handled by Ai Kikuchi. While some viewers appreciated the aesthetic shift from the source material, the show became a point of discussion regarding the pacing of its episodic structure and its distinct approach to the 'cool girlfriend' character archetype within the broader landscape of contemporary slice-of-life anime.
