Shin Dokonjou Gaeru: Dokonjou Yumemakura

Shin Dokonjou Gaeru: Dokonjou Yumemakura was released in 1982 as a cinematic entry in the long-running Dokonjou Gaeru franchise. Following the success of the original 1970s manga by Yasumi Yoshizawa and the subsequent television anime adaptations, this film was produced by Tokyo Movie Shinsha to capitalize on the enduring popularity of the series' central character, Pyonkichi, the frog who lives on the shirt of a young boy named Hiroshi.

The film was directed by Satoshi Dezaki, a prominent figure in anime of that era who sought to translate the series' blend of slapstick humor and heartfelt suburban narratives into a feature-length format. While the animation style remained faithful to the established aesthetic of the series, the film is noted for its dream-themed narrative, which allowed the production team to experiment with more surreal visual sequences than were typically permitted in the standard television episodes.
