Where it came from
Shin Ikki Tousen was produced in 2022 as a direct continuation of the long-running Ikki Tousen franchise, which is based on the manga by Yuji Shiozaki. The series follows the tradition of reinterpreting historical figures from the Romance of the Three Kingdoms as modern-day high school students involved in martial arts rivalries. Produced by Studio ARMS, the series was designed to transition the narrative toward the next generation of characters, focusing on the daughter of Hakufu Sonsaku, Chuuun Sonsaku, as she steps into the center of the ongoing conflict.
The production sought to maintain the hyper-stylized action and character-driven aesthetic established by previous iterations of the franchise. While the series was aimed primarily at the existing fan base of the long-running manga and anime property, it received a mixed reception typical of late-stage installments in established series. Critics generally focused on the technical execution of the fight choreography and the series' adherence to its hallmark blend of high-stakes supernatural combat and school-life drama.
