Shin Saru Kani Gassen

Shin Saru Kani Gassen, or The New Battle of the Monkey and the Crab, was produced by the National Film Center in Japan as part of an effort to preserve and document the evolution of Japanese animation. It serves as a modern reimagining of the classic folktale, which typically centers on themes of retribution and justice, translated here through the lens of mid-20th-century aesthetic sensibilities.

The production reflects the experimental animation techniques prevalent in Japan during its era of development. By stripping back the narrative to its folkloric roots and emphasizing stylized movement, the creators sought to bridge the gap between traditional storytelling and the emerging medium of motion picture arts. It is regarded by film historians as a significant specimen of cultural heritage that showcases how traditional Japanese motifs were adapted for contemporary audiences.
