Shinryaku! Ika Musume: Kore ga Umi e no Ai Jana-ika!

Released in 2011, this original video animation (OVA) serves as a companion piece to the Shinryaku! Ika Musume television series produced by studio Diomedéa. Based on the manga by Masahiro Anbe, the series follows an anthropomorphic squid girl who arrives on land to conquer humanity, only to become entangled in the daily life of a beachside restaurant. This production was created to capitalize on the series' popularity, providing fans with additional narrative content that maintains the lighthearted, surreal humor and distinctive aesthetic established in the main series.

The animation style, overseen by the studio's production team, was designed to translate Anbe’s minimalist character designs into a vibrant, comedic medium. The visual approach leans heavily into bright, saturated coastal palettes and expressive character acting to match the absurdity of the squid girl’s failed invasion attempts. Upon release, the OVA was well-received by the established fan base, valued for its faithful adherence to the source material's tone and its continuation of the charm that made the original television run a notable success in the comedy-slice-of-life genre.
