Where it came from
Shin Seiki GPX Cyber Formula Graffiti was released in 1992 as a direct-to-video retrospective following the success of the original television series, which aired in 1991. The OVA was produced by Sunrise and served as a creative bridge, utilizing a music video-style format to compile key moments and character highlights from the first season, reflecting the studio's desire to celebrate the series' cult popularity while capitalizing on the booming direct-to-video market of the early nineties.
The production leans heavily on the aesthetic established by character designer Hisashi Hirai and the creative team behind the Cyber Formula franchise. The design intent was to emphasize the high-octane racing sequences and the evolving interpersonal dynamics of the main cast through a curated visual lens. As a commemorative release, it was received primarily as a keepsake for dedicated fans of the racing drama, providing a stylistic look back at the show's animation milestones and the technical evolution of the titular Cyber Machines.
