Where it came from
Shinmai Maou no Testament: DEPARTURES - Maria no Hizou Eizou was produced by Studio IMS as a concluding special for the Testament of Sister New Devil anime series. Released in 2018, the project served as a final installment to wrap up narrative threads following the conclusion of the second season, catering to a dedicated fan base that had followed the light novel adaptation since its debut in 2015.
The production maintains the aesthetic established by the series, focusing on the character Maria Naruse and incorporating intimate, fan-service-oriented vignettes typical of the franchise's visual style. Directed by Hisashi Saito, the special was designed to leverage the established character dynamics of the series' core cast, though it received a mixed critical reception primarily due to its reliance on tropes and its limited scope compared to the main television seasons.
