Where it came from
Shin Mashin Eiyuuden Wataru Majinzan was released in 1989 as a direct-to-video follow-up to the successful Mashin Eiyuuden Wataru television series produced by Sunrise. Developed during a period when the studio was heavily invested in the fantasy-mecha genre, this OVA served to bridge the narrative gap and satisfy the fan demand for more adventures following the conclusion of the original show's run.
The character and mecha designs remained rooted in the distinctive aesthetic established by the original series, emphasizing a blend of traditional fantasy tropes and stylized, rounded robot designs. Created under the creative umbrella of Sunrise's established production teams, the work was received as a nostalgic extension of the Wataru brand, maintaining the lighthearted tone and imaginative world-building that had defined the franchise's popularity among young viewers.
