Where it came from
Shinsekai Pygmalion is a dark fantasy manga series written and illustrated by Hiroshi Okubo. Serialized beginning in 2018 in Mag Garden's Monthly Comic Garden, the work was conceived as a grim, surreal subversion of the Pygmalion myth, set within a dystopian world where humanity faces a grotesque existential threat. The narrative centers on a protagonist navigating a landscape filled with uncanny, lifelike dolls that mirror the psychological trauma of their creators.
Okubo’s artistic style in this series is characterized by its stark contrast between delicate character designs and disturbing, visceral body horror. The manga was received as a niche entry in the horror genre, often noted for its unconventional pacing and unsettling aesthetic choices. It represents a departure from traditional shonen tropes, focusing instead on themes of obsession, isolation, and the blurred lines between art and artificial life.
