Shironeko Project ZERO CHRONICLE was produced by studio project No.9 and premiered in 2020 as an anime adaptation of the third-anniversary event from the popular mobile action role-playing game developed by Colopl. The series serves as a prequel to the main game's narrative, focusing on the origins of the world and the central conflict between the Kingdom of Light and the Empire of Darkness. By centering on the characters Prince of Darkness and Queen of Light, the production sought to explore the tragic lore that fans had previously experienced only in shorter, game-integrated vignettes.

The adaptation was directed by Masato Jinbo, who also handled the series composition, aiming to capture the high-fantasy aesthetic of the source material while translating the game's intuitive touch-based combat mechanics into a coherent narrative visual language. The project was intended to expand the intellectual property's reach beyond its mobile gaming roots.
