Shitcom

Shitcom is a satirical web series created by filmmaker and video essayist Dan Olson, debuting in 2012 as an original net animation (ONA). The project was born out of the burgeoning era of independent online media, specifically targeting the tropes and formulaic nature of traditional multi-camera sitcoms. By utilizing a deliberate lo-fi aesthetic and surreal, often abrasive humor, Olson sought to dismantle the comforting predictability of the genre, presenting an anti-comedy experience that resonated with a niche audience accustomed to early internet-era experimental video content.

The production design reflects an intentional subversion of mainstream television aesthetics, utilizing crude digital assets and jarring editing techniques to highlight the artificiality of its source material. Rather than aiming for high-fidelity animation, the project prioritized conceptual irony and meta-commentary, positioning itself as a critique of the creative bankruptcy Olson perceived in commercial programming at the time. While it remains an obscure artifact of the early 2010s internet landscape, it is frequently cited by followers of Olson’s later work as a foundational example of his critical approach to media analysis.
