Where it came from
Shocking Black was introduced by NARS Cosmetics in 1994 as one of the original twelve lipsticks that launched the brand. Created by makeup artist and photographer François Nars, the collection was conceived to provide highly pigmented, versatile colors in a sophisticated matte finish. The intent was to offer a modern alternative to the prevailing cosmetic trends of the early nineties, focusing on bold self-expression and professional-grade performance.
The lipstick is housed in the brand's signature soft-touch, rubberized black packaging, a design choice by Fabien Baron that emphasized minimalism and tactile luxury. Shocking Black specifically gained notoriety for its deep, intense pigment, which challenged the standard beauty conventions of the time. It remains a notable archival piece within the NARS portfolio, frequently cited in industry retrospectives for its role in establishing the brand's identity as a disruptor in the beauty market.
