Where it came from
Short Peace is a 2013 multimedia project that serves as an anthology of four animated short films, brought together by the visionary creator Katsuhiro Otomo. Produced by Studio Sunrise, the project was designed to explore Japanese history and folklore through diverse artistic lenses, bringing together some of the most acclaimed directors in the industry. The anthology includes Otomo’s own segment, 'Combustible,' alongside contributions from Shuhei Morita, Hiroaki Ando, and Hajime Katoki.
The films were conceived to showcase a fusion of traditional Japanese aesthetics with modern digital animation techniques. The shorts—titled 'Possessions,' 'Combustible,' 'Gambo,' and 'A Farewell to Weapons'—range from ethereal folktales to gritty science fiction. Upon its release, the collection was praised for its stylistic variety and technical ambition, notably earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Short Film for the segment 'Possessions,' which solidified the project's reputation as a high-water mark for contemporary Japanese animation anthologies.
