Where it came from
Shoshimin: How to become Ordinary is an anime adaptation of the mystery novel series by Honobu Yonezawa. The second season, produced by studio Lapin Track and released in 2025, continues the story of protagonists Kobato and Osanai, who attempt to suppress their distinctive traits to lead peaceful, ordinary lives. The production follows the stylistic foundations established in the first season, focusing on a restrained, atmospheric aesthetic that contrasts with the characters' underlying desire for intellectual stimulation.
The series is noted for its faithful translation of Yonezawa’s light, observant tone, which deviates from typical high-stakes mystery tropes by centering on small, daily occurrences. Directed by Mamoru Kanbe, the design team at Lapin Track prioritized clean lines and a soft color palette to mirror the protagonists' facade of normalcy. Upon its release, the adaptation was well-regarded for its deliberate pacing and careful visual storytelling, which emphasizes the quiet tension inherent in the characters' pact to remain unremarkable.
