Shui Man Jinshan

Shui Man Jinshan is a renowned episode within the 1992 television series The Legend of White Snake, a landmark production in Chinese television history. Based on the classic Chinese folklore of the White Snake, this installment depicts the dramatic climax where the protagonist, Bai Suzhen, floods the Jinshan Temple in a desperate attempt to rescue her husband, Xu Xian. The series was produced by Taiwan Television (TTV) and became a cultural phenomenon, widely praised for its blend of traditional Huangmei opera singing styles with contemporary television drama.

The production is noted for its distinctive visual aesthetic, which leaned into elaborate stage-like sets and stylized costuming that paid homage to traditional Chinese opera. The creative direction, overseen by producer Tsao Ching-tai, aimed to humanize the legendary figures of the myth, transforming them from distant deities into characters defined by sacrifice and devotion. Upon its broadcast, the series—and this episode in particular—was met with immense critical acclaim, cementing its status as an enduring classic in Sinophone popular culture and influencing numerous subsequent adaptations.
