Skeleton Bookstore Employee Honda OVA

The Skeleton Bookstore Employee (Gaikotsu Shotenin Honda-san) Honda OVA was released in 2019 following the conclusion of the television anime adaptation of Honda's popular manga series. Produced by studio DLE, the short OVA served as a comedic epilogue, further detailing the chaotic daily life of a skeleton working at a Japanese bookstore. The series itself, which originated as a web manga, gained traction for its deadpan humor and authentic depiction of the retail book industry, turning the mundane struggles of inventory management and customer interactions into a surreal and relatable experience.

The design of the series centers on the character Honda, a skeleton whose visual starkness contrasts sharply with the frantic energy of his human colleagues. The animation style relies on the signature aesthetic established by DLE, characterized by a minimalist approach that emphasizes comedic timing and expressive character reactions over complex fluid animation. Upon release, the series and its subsequent OVA were well-received for their dry wit and accurate representation of the challenges faced by booksellers, appealing to both anime fans and those familiar with the specific quirks of the publishing retail world.
