Where it came from
Slay the Gods, also known as 'Zhan Shen', emerged from the rapid expansion of Tencent Penguin Pictures into the high-end 3D animated web series market. Produced as an ONA (Original Net Animation), the series was crafted to leverage China’s burgeoning interest in xianxia and cultivation narratives, fitting within the studio’s strategy to adapt popular web novels into serialized streaming content to drive engagement on the Tencent Video platform.
The visual design of the series centers on the stylistic fusion of traditional Chinese aesthetic elements with modern CGI rendering techniques. The animation team focused on fluid, high-octane combat sequences and detailed character models to distinguish the series within the competitive landscape of domestic animation. While the production serves as a testament to the technical capabilities of Tencent's partner studios, it remains a product of a corporate-driven industrial model intended for mass-market digital consumption.
