Where it came from
Slayers: The Book of Spells, known in Japan as Slayers Special, was released in 1996 as a series of three original video animations. Produced by J.C.Staff, these OVAs served as a prequel to the main television series, focusing on the earlier, more whimsical adventures of the sorceress Lina Inverse and her companion Naga the White Serpent. The production aimed to capture the comedic tone of the original light novels by Hajime Kanzaka, emphasizing character chemistry over the grander, world-threatening stakes found in the mainline entries.
The visual direction for the OVA series was guided by the character designs of Takahiro Yoshimatsu, who adapted Rui Araizumi's distinct, expressive illustrations for the screen. By utilizing a slightly more detailed animation style than the television series, the studio sought to highlight the over-the-top magical displays and slapstick interactions characteristic of the franchise. Upon release, the series was well-received by fans of the genre for its lighthearted energy and the strong rapport between the two lead voice actresses, Megumi Hayashibara and Maria Kawamura.
