Where it came from
Slayers Excellent is a three-episode original video animation series released in 1998, serving as a prequel to the broader Slayers franchise. Produced by J.C.Staff, the series explores the earlier adventures of the protagonist Lina Inverse and her companion Naga the Serpent. It was developed to expand upon the light novel source material, maintaining the comedic fantasy tone that defined the television series while utilizing the higher production values typically afforded to the ova format of that era.
The character designs for the series were handled by Rui Araizumi, whose distinct, expressive style remains a cornerstone of the franchise's visual identity. J.C.Staff aimed to capture the rapid-fire banter and high-energy magical battles that made the franchise popular among anime fans in the late 1990s. Upon its release, it was well-received by the established fanbase, providing a deeper look into the dynamic between Lina and Naga before they became the iconic rivals seen in the main television narrative.
