Where it came from
Sol Bianca was produced by Anime International Company (AIC) in 1990 as a two-part original video animation (OVA) series. It emerged during the height of the bubble-era anime market, a period characterized by high production values and experimental storytelling directed straight to the home video market. The series focuses on a group of space pirates captained by April Bikard, navigating a retro-futuristic science fiction landscape that drew heavily on space opera traditions.
The character designs were handled by Kiohiko Nishikawa, who aimed for a distinct aesthetic that balanced sharp, detailed mechanical design with the fluid, expressive character animation that AIC was known for at the time. The series received attention for its polished visual presentation and its departure from typical shonen tropes, establishing itself as a cult classic within the OVA subgenre of the early nineties.
