Where it came from
Sollotalchulgwi, widely known in English as 'Suddenly at Midnight,' was released in 1981 and stands as a seminal work in the South Korean horror genre. Directed by Go Young-nam, the film emerged during a period of strict censorship in South Korean cinema, yet managed to push boundaries by blending supernatural elements with domestic psychological tension. It follows the story of a shaman’s daughter who enters a household as a nanny, only to trigger a series of eerie, vengeful occurrences that challenge the status quo of the family.
The film is celebrated for its atmospheric cinematography and its departure from the standard ghost tropes of the era, focusing instead on internal anxieties and social commentary. Kim Young-ae’s performance as the protagonist is frequently cited as a highlight, grounding the surreal plot in a relatable, albeit unsettling, reality. While it did not achieve massive commercial success upon its initial release, it has since been rediscovered by international film scholars and cult horror enthusiasts who value it as a masterclass in building dread through minimalism and claustrophobic staging.
