Sorairo Utility

Sorairo Utility is a 2021 special produced by Yostar Pictures, the animation studio subsidiary of the developer behind the popular mobile game Azur Lane. Released as a standalone project, it serves as a showcase for the studio’s internal animation capabilities and its distinct aesthetic style, which balances high-fidelity character design with fluid, slice-of-life storytelling. The project was conceived as an original work rather than an adaptation of existing game intellectual property, allowing the studio to experiment with a more grounded, atmospheric visual tone.

The animation was directed by Kengo Saito, who aimed to emphasize natural movement and subtle character expressions within a sports-themed narrative centered on golf. By focusing on the interplay between the three main protagonists, the design team sought to capture a serene, vibrant aesthetic that leaned into the 'sorairo' (sky-blue) title. Upon its release, it was well-received by critics and the animation community as a technically polished effort that helped establish Yostar Pictures as a studio capable of producing high-quality original content beyond its gaming roots.
