Where it came from
Soukyuu no Fafner: BEHIND THE LINE was produced by Production I.G and released in 2023 as a side-story theatrical feature within the long-running Fafner franchise. Set between the events of the original 2004 series and the later expansions, the film was designed to bridge narrative gaps and revisit the core cast during a period of relative peace, serving as a nostalgic celebration of the series' twentieth anniversary.
The production sought to maintain the visual and thematic continuity established by Xebec in earlier installments, focusing on the character-driven interpersonal dynamics that define the franchise's melancholic tone. Directed by Takashi Noto, who has been instrumental in the series' visual direction for years, the project was received by the fanbase as a poignant epilogue that prioritizes emotional resolution and character development over the high-stakes combat typical of the series' climactic arcs.
