Where it came from
Soul Reviver is a 2013 original net animation series produced by Digital Frontier, a studio primarily recognized for its high-end computer-generated imagery in film and gaming. The project emerged from a collaboration between publisher Hero's Inc. and the studio to showcase Japanese animation capabilities through a narrative centered on agents tasked with rescuing souls in the afterlife. The series was designed to blend traditional anime aesthetics with sophisticated motion-capture technology and realistic 3D character modeling.
The character designs were overseen by renowned manga artist Mitsuki Fukaya, who aimed to create a visually distinct tone that balanced supernatural themes with action-oriented choreography. Upon its release, the project was primarily received as a technical experiment, drawing interest from industry observers curious about the potential for full-CG workflows in serialized anime. It remains a notable example of the mid-2010s push by Japanese studios to bridge the gap between cinematic CGI quality and domestic anime storytelling conventions.
