Where it came from
Space Travelers: The Animation was produced in 2000 by Studio Robot as a companion piece to the live-action feature film Space Travelers, directed by Katsuyuki Motohiro. Created as an original video animation, it served to flesh out the backstory and thematic scope of the film's universe, which follows a group of bank robbers who find themselves caught in a complex hostage situation that escalates into a media spectacle.
The animation features a distinct aesthetic departure from the grounded tone of the live-action film, leaning into more stylized, futuristic character designs and kinetic visual sequences. By utilizing the medium of animation, the studio was able to explore the lore of the space-faring motifs hinted at in the original narrative, acting as both a visual expansion of the property and a stylistic experiment for the production team during the early 2000s.
