Space Symphonic Poem Maetel ~Galaxy Express 999 Side Story~

Released in 2004, Space Symphonic Poem Maetel serves as a narrative bridge and side story within the expansive Galaxy Express 999 universe created by Leiji Matsumoto. Produced by Azeta Pictures, the series was designed to delve into the enigmatic backstory of the character Maetel, exploring her transformation and the philosophical underpinnings of the machine-based society central to Matsumoto’s work. The project aimed to capture the melancholic and operatic tone signature to the franchise, utilizing a musical-thematic structure that reflects the series' long-standing integration of symphonic motifs with space opera aesthetics.

The animation and character design for the project sought to honor Matsumoto’s iconic visual style, characterized by slender, evocative figures and sprawling, cosmic environments. By focusing specifically on Maetel’s origins, the series was intended to satisfy the curiosity of long-time fans who sought deeper context regarding her relationship with the Iron Maiden and the internal conflicts of the Galaxy Express world. While it occupies a niche space within the broader Leijiverse, it remains a notable example of the studio’s effort to expand upon the lore of one of Japan’s most influential science fiction creators.
