Where it came from
Spaceketeers, originally titled SF Saiyuki Starzinger in Japan, was produced by Toei Animation and debuted in 1978. It served as the third installment in the Starzinger trilogy, designed by the prolific Leiji Matsumoto. The series was a creative reimagining of the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West, transposing the narrative into a futuristic space opera setting to capitalize on the late 1970s fascination with science fiction sparked by Star Wars.
The series was noted for its distinct aesthetic, which blended Matsumoto’s signature mechanical and character design sensibilities with the adventurous tone characteristic of Toei's output during that era. While it found a loyal audience in Japan and later saw success in various international markets through edited dubs, the series is remembered today as a foundational example of the space fantasy genre that helped shape the visual language of televised anime for the following decade.
