Where it came from
Released in 2002, Space Pirate Captain Herlock: The Endless Odyssey served as a modern revival of Leiji Matsumoto’s iconic anti-hero. Produced by Studio Madhouse and directed by Rintaro, the thirteen-episode OVA series sought to translate the melancholy, operatic tone of the original 1970s manga into a contemporary aesthetic, blending traditional character designs with early digital animation techniques to evoke a sense of deep-space isolation.
The series was part of a larger push in the early 2000s to revisit classic Matsumoto properties. Rintaro, who had previously directed the 1978 Captain Harlock film, aimed to focus on the philosophical and existential elements of the character rather than straightforward action. While it received praise for its ambitious visual style and score, it remains a distinct entry in the franchise, noted for its deliberate pacing and atmospheric, often somber, interpretation of the pirate’s endless journey.
