Where it came from
Special Crime Investigation Unit: Special 7 was originally produced as a television anime series by studio Anima&Co., airing in late 2019. The series centers on a ragtag group of specialized police investigators tasked with handling supernatural and criminal threats in an alternate version of Tokyo. Following the conclusion of the television run, this OVA was released in 2020 as a direct follow-up, designed to provide fans with an additional narrative chapter that maintained the show's distinct blend of lighthearted character dynamics and urban fantasy aesthetics.
The visual design and animation direction for the Special 7 project aimed to balance stylized, futuristic character models with a grounded, noir-inspired city backdrop. While the series received modest attention during its broadcast, the 2020 OVA served as a targeted offering for the established fanbase, focusing on deepening the internal relationships of the ensemble cast. The production reflects the mid-tier anime industry's approach to episodic storytelling, where additional content is produced to round out a franchise's narrative footprint after the initial broadcast cycle.
