Where it came from
Spirit Warrior, known in Japan as Genji, was released as a three-part original video animation series in 1988. Produced by AIC and directed by Mamoru Oshii, the project was based on the dark fantasy novel series by Hideyuki Kikuchi. The narrative draws heavily from the Heike Monogatari, blending historical tragedy with supernatural horror to depict a centuries-long vendetta between spirits and humanity.
The animation reflects the high-budget, ambitious aesthetic of the late 1980s OVA boom, a period where studios experimented with mature themes and more fluid character designs. The art direction leaned into a somber, atmospheric tone that mirrored the grim nature of the source material. While it remains a cult classic among fans of period fantasy, it was noted at the time for its challenging, nonlinear storytelling and its dark departure from more traditional anime tropes of the era.
