Spooky Kitaro: The Obake Nighter

Spooky Kitaro: The Obake Nighter, released in 1997, is a short feature film produced by Toei Animation as part of the broader revival of Shigeru Mizuki’s legendary GeGeGe no Kitaro franchise. During the 1990s, Toei sought to introduce a new generation to Mizuki’s yokai-inspired stories, utilizing the aesthetic sensibilities of the era’s animation while maintaining the eerie, folklore-driven atmosphere that defined the series since its manga debut in the 1960s.

The film’s design reflects the distinct visual style of the 1996 television series adaptation, characterized by sharp character lines and vibrant, yet spooky, color palettes. It was crafted as a standalone entry within a series of theatrical shorts designed to showcase the versatility of Kitaro's world, focusing on the intersection of modern life and the supernatural. The project was received as a respectful expansion of the franchise, appealing both to long-time fans of Mizuki’s work and a younger audience drawn to the 90s supernatural anime boom.
