Where it came from
Spookiz, a South Korean animated series produced by Keyring Studios, debuted its first season in 2014 as an online-distributed series. The show was conceived as a lighthearted, non-verbal comedy set in a night school for young monsters, drawing inspiration from classic horror tropes while subverting them with a whimsical, character-driven aesthetic suitable for a younger audience.
The character designs were developed by the creative team at Keyring to prioritize expressive, silhouette-driven visuals that could communicate narrative beats without the need for dialogue. By utilizing a universal visual language, the series successfully garnered an international following via digital platforms, leading to its expansion into various shorts and merchandise lines.
