Where it came from
Star Cat Fullhouse was released in 1989 as an original video animation (OVA) produced by the Japanese studio Artland. During the late 1980s, the OVA market was a vibrant experimental space for animation studios to test niche concepts outside of the constraints of television broadcast, and this title leaned into the popular aesthetic of soft science fiction and character-driven comedy prevalent in the era.
The production sought to balance whimsical character design with the technical standards Artland was known for, aiming to capture the interest of fans of space-faring adventures. While the title remains a relatively obscure relic of the late Showa-era animation boom, it serves as a representative example of how smaller studios attempted to carve out a foothold in the direct-to-video market by blending creative charm with traditional cel-animation techniques.
