Where it came from
Star Ocean EX was produced by Studio DEEN and premiered in 2001, serving as an animated adaptation of the popular role-playing game Star Ocean: The Second Story. Developed by tri-Ace and published by Enix, the original game was a cornerstone of the PlayStation era, known for its intricate sci-fi and fantasy fusion, which the anime sought to translate into a linear television format.
The series was directed by Hiroshi Watanabe and aimed to condense the vast, branching narrative of the source material into a twenty-six-episode arc. While the production reflects the distinct early-2000s aesthetic of Studio DEEN, it received a mixed reception from fans of the game who found the compressed storytelling and deviations from the original characters' backstories to be a notable departure from the experience offered by the game's multiple endings.
