Where it came from
The Ninth Jedi emerged as a standalone short film within the Star Wars: Visions initiative, a project designed to allow renowned animation studios to explore the Star Wars galaxy through the lens of anime storytelling traditions. Produced by the acclaimed Japanese studio Production I.G, the short was created to honor the spirit of the original films while introducing original aesthetic choices, such as lightsabers that change color based on the wielder's connection to the Force.
Directed by Kenji Kamiyama, the production team sought to weave a narrative focused on the remnants of the Jedi Order during a time of decline. The design language emphasizes fluid, high-octane action sequences paired with traditional cel-shaded art styles, a hallmark of the studio. Upon its release, it was widely praised by critics and fans for its emotional depth and its innovative approach to the established visual iconography of the franchise.
