Stitch!

Stitch! was commissioned by Disney as the first international spin-off of the Lilo & Stitch franchise, moving the setting from Hawaii to the fictional Japanese island of Izayoi. Produced by the acclaimed Japanese animation studio Madhouse and debuting in 2008, the series served as a strategic effort to adapt the globally recognized character for the East Asian market by shifting the narrative tone toward traditional anime tropes while retaining the core premise of the alien experiment's chaotic journey toward goodness.

The character design for this iteration was overseen by the production team at Madhouse, who adjusted Stitch's proportions to better align with contemporary Japanese character-based animation styles. While the series successfully anchored the franchise's presence in Japan and Southeast Asia, it received a mixed reception from long-time fans of the original 2002 film, who noted a significant tonal departure from the emotional storytelling of the western films in favor of a more episodic and comedic structure.
