Where it came from
Released in 1993, Suikoden Demon Century—also known as Genji Tsuushin Agedama—was produced by J.C.Staff as an original video animation that blends elements of fantasy and traditional Japanese folklore. The project emerged during a period of experimentation for the studio, which sought to capitalize on the growing interest in hyper-stylized, comedic adventure narratives that moved away from the more serious mecha or dramatic themes prevalent in the early 1990s OVA market.
The animation design emphasizes the vibrant, expressive character work for which J.C.Staff became known, aiming for a visual tone that was accessible yet energetic. While the title is rooted in a specific creative exploration of mythological tropes, it remains a niche entry in the studio's extensive filmography. It was generally received as a lighthearted piece of its era, serving primarily as a reflection of the creative freedom granted to animators within the independent direct-to-video format at the time.
