Super Atragon

Super Atragon, released as a two-part original video animation in 1995, was produced by the studio Phoenix Entertainment under the direction of Keiji Hayakawa. The work serves as a loose adaptation of the classic science fiction novels by Shunro Oshikawa, specifically focusing on the legendary submarine Atragon. The animation was created during the height of the mid-90s interest in reimagining pre-war Japanese adventure literature, blending classic naval themes with the popular mecha and high-stakes military aesthetics that defined the era's OVA market.

The visual design and animation direction emphasize a grounded, industrial aesthetic intended to contrast with the more fantastical elements of the plot. By situating the narrative within an alternate history framework, the creators aimed to evoke the spirit of retro-futuristic pulp fiction. Upon its international release by ADV Films, it found a niche audience among enthusiasts of classic-style naval science fiction, though it remains a cult title relative to the more mainstream mecha series of the mid-90s.
