Sweet Valerian

Sweet Valerian was produced by the acclaimed studio Madhouse and released in 2004 as a unique experimental project. It originated as a series of short-form segments featured on the NHK program Digital Stadium, which sought to showcase the work of independent and up-and-coming creators within the Japanese animation industry. The series is notable for its departure from traditional anime aesthetics, favoring a distinct, hand-drawn, and often surreal visual style that emphasizes character-driven comedy over complex narrative arcs.

The character designs and overall artistic direction for the series were helmed by the illustrator and animator Momo Iwasa. Her vision for the show focused on the whimsical and sometimes chaotic lives of three magical girls living in a contemporary setting, blending the 'mahou shoujo' genre tropes with a dry, irreverent sense of humor. While it remains a niche entry in the Madhouse catalog, the series is well-regarded by collectors and animation enthusiasts for its stylistic audacity and its role in highlighting the creative flexibility of one of Japan’s most storied animation houses.
