Where it came from
Swimming to Sea was produced by the E-DEHI Animation Studio, emerging from a period of experimental independent animation in East Asia that sought to blend traditional illustrative styles with modern digital storytelling. The film was conceived as a contemplative exploration of environmental themes, specifically focusing on the migration patterns of marine life and the human impact on aquatic ecosystems.
The artistic direction for the film prioritized a minimalist aesthetic, utilizing muted color palettes and fluid, hand-drawn character designs to evoke a sense of tranquility. Upon its release, it was primarily recognized within international film festival circuits for its unique visual language and rhythmic pacing, garnering praise from critics who lauded the studio for its commitment to atmospheric world-building over conventional narrative tropes.
