Where it came from
Tabi Hani: Kyoto-hen was released in 2023 by studio hb as a feature-length project that reflects the studio's focus on immersive, atmospheric storytelling. The film serves as a contemplative exploration of its setting, prioritizing a sense of place and quiet observation, which is a hallmark of the studio's aesthetic approach to modern independent animation.
The film's design emphasizes a refined, painterly quality meant to capture the specific light and architectural history of Kyoto. By focusing on sensory detail and a deliberate narrative pace, the production team aimed to evoke a feeling of travel and discovery, distancing the work from the high-octane tropes of mainstream animation to instead offer a grounded, meditative experience for the viewer.
