Where it came from
Tatsuki Fujimoto's 17-26 is a collection of short stories penned by the acclaimed manga artist behind Chainsaw Man and Look Back. Originally published as individual one-shots between 2020 and 2022, these works were compiled to showcase Fujimoto’s distinctive approach to short-form narrative, which often balances surreal, grounded character drama with sudden, visceral shifts in tone. The 2025 movie adaptation, produced by Studio ZEXCS, seeks to translate these diverse vignettes into a cohesive cinematic experience.
The adaptation by Studio ZEXCS focuses on preserving the raw, cinematic paneling style that Fujimoto is known for in his print work. By shifting these stories into an animated medium, the production team aimed to emphasize the mundane yet haunting quality of his storytelling. The project was received with significant anticipation by the artist's fanbase, who were eager to see how the studio would interpret his specific visual language and pacing, which frequently breaks traditional manga tropes to emphasize emotional weight and abrupt narrative turns.
