Provenance

Where it came from

Teenage Mercenary, also known as Mercenary Enrollment, originated as a popular South Korean webtoon written by YC and illustrated by Rakhyun. The story follows Ijin Yu, a young man who returns to a normal life after surviving a plane crash and spending a decade as a lethal mercenary, forcing him to navigate the complexities of high school while protecting his family. The series gained significant traction for its blend of grounded family drama and high-octane action, leading to an adaptation produced by the Japanese animation studio J.C.Staff.

The adaptation by J.C.Staff carries the distinct aesthetic sensibilities of the studio, known for their versatility in both slice-of-life and action-oriented genres. By translating the webtoon's manhwa style into a television anime format, the production team aimed to retain the intense emotional stakes of Ijin's transition from the battlefield to the classroom. Upon its announcement and release, the project was highly anticipated by the existing fanbase of the source material, who were eager to see the stylized combat choreography and character dynamics brought to life through fluid animation.
