Where it came from
Tempura is a 2018 short film directed by Akiko Izumitani, produced as part of the 21st Century Japan project. The film serves as a contemplative exploration of culinary tradition and generational connection, set against the backdrop of a traditional Japanese kitchen. It was crafted to capture the rhythmic, sensory nature of cooking as an act of cultural preservation.
The film was noted for its minimalist visual aesthetic and focus on tactile detail, stripping away dialogue to emphasize the mastery required in preparing tempura. Upon its festival release, it received positive recognition for its cinematography and its ability to communicate a narrative arc through purely visual and auditory cues rather than expository storytelling.
