Where it came from
Released by Studio Gainax in 2010, Parallel Works 2 serves as a follow-up to the original experimental music video collection inspired by the 2007 television series Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. These releases were conceived as a creative sandbox for the studio's animators and invited guest artists to re-interpret the show's core themes of evolution and rebellion through distinct, non-canonical visual styles, ranging from abstract art to folk-inspired puppetry.
The design of the collection leans into the avant-garde spirit of Gainax’s later period, prioritizing artistic expression over the linear narrative of the main series. By pairing original orchestral arrangements and character-driven vignettes with disparate animation techniques, the project was received by fans and critics as a bold, stylized expansion of the franchise’s lore that prioritized the studio's technical prowess and creative freedom.
